Let’s be honest, every day should be health day - taking care of your body, mind and soul, inspiring others to take care of theirs, etc. But there is a special day set aside to be proud and loud and to celebrate health globally: World Health Day!
World Health Day is celebrated on April 7th every year to mark the anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO), the leading global health authority within the UN founded in 1948.
The goals of World Health Day include increasing public awareness and prevention of various issues, promoting self-care, motivating world health authorities to work on creating a healthy environment in their countries, protecting families in disease vulnerable areas and more.
To celebrate the day, various conferences, events, programs and contests are being held around the globe. Of course, you can also participate by taking care of your own health and encouraging others to do the same.
2017 Theme For World Health Day
Every year there is a different theme chosen for this event. 2017 is celebrating World Health Day with the theme of “Depression: Let’s Talk.” This a powerful theme all about raising awareness for mental health issues, pointing out the importance of health outside of our physical bodies and removing the stigma of mental and emotional health issues.
Depression is more than just sadness. It is more of a steady low that stays with you and can seriously affect the quality of your life.
To be clinically diagnosed with depression, you have to meet specific psychological criteria laid out in the DSM-V diagnosed by a mental health professional. Depression affects 350 million people worldwide, according to the WHO. You can be experiencing many signs and symptoms of depression without ticking off each box.
Signs of depression include:
- Sadness
- Loneliness and/or isolation
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
- Lack of motivation
- Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
- Fatigue and changes in sleep patterns
- Changes in appetite and/or weight
- Uncontrollable emotions
- Anxiety and irritability
- Feeling empty
Depression is not just in your head. There is increasing scientific evidence that nutrition plays an important role in mental health. A poor diet can lead to depression, while a healthy one can prevent it and decrease or eliminate your symptoms.
According to Dr. Julia Rucklidge, a whole foods diet - rich in organic foods, high in fruits and vegetables and without processed ingredients and refined sugar - can have a powerful, positive effect on your mental health and can aid in helping depression and other mental health issues.

Besides nutrition, there are other natural ways to help prevent and reduce the symptoms of depression:
- Self-compassion and compassion
- Mindfulness techniques
